I've been meaning to post some pic of my audio install. Rather than write an essay I will be brief with lots of pictures.

Aim of the system was light and competition level sound quality. I used CLD, Egg box foam and 3M thinsulate to sound deaden. The latter two are very very light. I added 6kg of CLD total.

I decided pretty quickly to have a front and sub with a fully active setup. Pioneer Headunit with DSP and crossovers built in and 3 amplifiers; a two channel for tweeters, a two channel for mid/bass and a single channel for sub. The two front amps fit under the drivers and passenger seat. The sub amp goes in the back mounted to the sub box on isolation feet.

Doors were damped with CLD, sealed to make air tight as possible and foamed to prevent rattles. Speakers mounted on MDF baffles treated to seal them from water damage. 

I also added sound deadening to rear arches which made a world of difference.

• DEH-80PRS Headunit
• Genesis Profile 2 for Tweeters (under passenger seat)
• Genesis Profile 4 bridged to drive the mid/bass (Under Driver Seat)
• Genesis Profile Sub for the Sub (boot)
• Morel Virtus 602 component fronts
• Peerless XLS 10 4ohm subwoofer
• Van Damme Pro Audio Blue Speaker Cable (2.5mm for mid/bass and Sub, 1.5mm for tweeters)
• Van Damme Pro Audio Instrument cable with Brass Gold plated RCA connetors
• CCA 4AWG and 8AWG power cable

Next up - The Battery

Installed an AGM battery for better voltage regulation

 

The Doors

Damped with CLD and added some Egg box foam inside

Sealed to make as air tight as possible

Whole door covered in closed cell foam

Speaker baffle with acoustic foam to protect the back of the speaker from water

I forgot to take a pic of the passenger side but here is the drivers side for the mid bass (its bridged Genesis Profile 4)

 

The Sub

Sub enclosure is a hybrid MDF and Fiberglass molded to the base of the boot and bolted down using the spare wheel anchor and screwed to a bit of MDF glue the panel at the back.

Finally some addition sound deadening to block some road noise

Layer of CLD to reduce panel resonance

and two layer of 3M thinsulate

This is the best place to start with sound deadening. Reduced road noise massively.

Looks good Ade! now the weather has improved I will be doing similar. What material did you use to seal the doors? looks like some sort of corrugated plastic? Also are your front door speakers full range or have you set up filters?

Thanks! I used twin wall 6mm thick to seal the doors from the builder merchant. I covered it with CLD to dampen them. I used this rather than wood because 1) it doesn't mind water and 2) its light.

Regarding crossovers, Its still work in progress but I currently have:

Right tweeter is high pass filtered at 2.5khz and left at 3.15Khz both with 12dB/Octave slopes

Mid bass are both  low passed at 2Khz with 12dB/Octave slopes and High passed at 100Hz with 12dB/octave slope

Sub is low passed at 80Hz with a 24dB/ocatave slope

There's still time for Blyton at the end of May. I fancy going back to Snetterton in June or July with some brakes that work this time as well!

I must say, a lovely job, with some really good attention to detail. Only thing I was going to ask is why a single din head unit?

Sounds weird, but having done this sort of thing before I most like the insides of the doors, very comprehensive.

I went with single because there isnt a pure sound quality double din available on the market with a good dsp.

 

It seems the sound quality headunit are still mostly single din whereas the doubles are more about fancy screens and features and less about all out sound quality.

Yes I did but im not a fan of going digital to analogue then analogue back to digital then digital to analogue again that and the increased complexity of the system.

 

Would have used a bit ten D if I could get a HU with digital out through.

 

The pioneer does all the signal processing, crossovers ect in the digital domain at 48bits then has 3 very high quality DACs and analoge sections. Its an utter bargain for what it is.

I know what you mean as the door preparation has the biggest effect on the sound. Each door took me 6 hours and copies amounts of both vaseline and expletives to get the speaker cable through the door grommets.

He's some closer pictures of the speakers. I love the smooth sound of Morel drive units in my home hifi so I though I would give their Virtus 602s a try.

and the XLS10 sub. XLS stands for extra long stroke, these little 10" monsters are capable of delivering pretty good high volume low distortion sound due to the high linear excursion. So you get the benefit of a tighter bottom end in a sealed box without sacrificing volume and ability to go low.

Cheers - still lots of tuning to do but starting to sound decent. I very nearly went for OEM+ and many times during this install (which took since January) was I swearing at myself for going the full custom route.
