Daninplymouth 61 Report post Posted March 17, 2020 Hi, iv recently had my car turbo’d and a TD oil cooler fitted. They use a 5-40w oil I think, and I just wondered as in my head I would’ve thought the thicker oil would take longer to get up to temp but my car seems to warm up quicker now. Now ambient temperatures are slightly higher this morning but only a couple of degrees. Or could it be the turbo and associated pipe work creates more warm air around the engine block so this helps warm things faster?
MartinT 514 Report post Posted March 17, 2020 Warm-up time for me is not significantly different now with the supercharger (no oil cooler), but then I don't give it stick from stone cold.
mart86 9 Report post Posted March 17, 2020 Mine takes near enough the same time to warm up now with turbo and no oil cooler. I know this because I've monitored before/after fitment and don't press on until it's fully warmed up.

I was just expecting it to take longer but that doesn’t seem to be the case
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted March 17, 2020 Maybe its the oil passing through the turbo?
MartinT 514 Report post Posted March 17, 2020 More heat in a turbo than a supercharger, for sure.

Does hot exhaust gas still flow through the turbo even though it’s producing no/minimal boost?

BRZ-123 174 Report post Posted March 18, 2020 One more variable, the oil cooler would have a bypass valve and not open until the oil is above a certain temperature. So that could contribute to it. Sent from my SM-G970F using Tapatalk
Daninplymouth 61 Report post Posted March 18, 2020 Thanks all, was just pleasantly surprised as I was expecting it to take much longer to get to temp but it’s actually the opposite 😁🏎💨
