Why modify a new car - I don't need this explained to me but...
JamesP1991 replied to remal's topic in GT86/BRZ General Chat
I just tell my girlfriend it's better than wasting it on booze, fags and going out, at which point I also ask why spending money on 20 handbags and 20 pairs of shoes is necessary too?! After that she has no arguement -
I see, let's hope he sorts it out this time then! I bet you are looking forward to seeing what his excuse is for being so slow for calling you back!

So I have been a bit quiet here recently, things have been mad at work and behind the scenes I have been desperate to try and get my car to how I want it! The pile of parts that are stacked in my room waiting to go on just keeps getting bigger, yet I just can't seem to find a time where I can take a day off and get it all sorted, these include: 4.55 Final Drive GFB Pulley Kit Beatrush MCB. Then a couple of weeks ago, after my girlfriend was fed up of me moaning about wanting more power, I ended up taking the plunge and bought a turbo kit for the car. I ended up going for the SBD turbo kit from the states, this is fully compatible with RHD (I have already checked) will be doing the install myself with a member of the family and then getting it custom mapped at Fensport, hopefully all in time for Japfest 2. With the kit you get: Mitsubishi 20G CHRA with 6+6 Billet Compressor Wheel Upgrade (same one found on the Evo X) Journal Bearing, Oil Cooled Internally Wastegated with .5 Bar (7.25 PSI) Spring 52.5mm IND/68mm EXD Compressor Wheel 49.2mm/55.8mm TD05H Turbine Wheel with 8cm Housing 3-Bar Map Sensor SBD 50mm Blow-Off Valve (I have gone for Blue) 4-Ply Silicone Hose in your Choice (I have gone for Blue here too) Tig Welded Stainless Steel Turbo Manifold and Exhaust Piping Mandrel Bent Aluminum Intercooler and Intake Piping Electronic Boost Controller Pre Welded Oil Pan I have also gone and bought a big K&N intake to replace the foam filter that comes with the kit and plan to start assembling it next weekend. Whilst the car will be in pieces I will also be putting on my master cylinder brace and my pulley kit before bolting the turbo kit in front of it. I have already spoke to the guys at Fensport and they are happy to custom map it. I am just going to go and drive it over there super carefully off boost so that I do no damage to the engine. Because I have got a new oil pan with the kit, I will be doing a full oil change, does anyone have any recommendations as to what oil to use with a turbo setup? Is it okay to still use 0w20 or is 5w20 a better option? I will be getting the oil at the start of next week. In terms of power, I will be going quite conservative (250-280hp at the wheels) to match my 4.55 FD that I will be putting in the car. I am happy to push it more further down the line knowing I have the heavy duty ACT clutch in there, but let's see how that feels first. Then later on in the year I will be getting some fat 235 section rubber to handle the power and also will purchase Stoptech's brake kit (October/November) time. I will try and post as many pictures as possible through the install. I know some guys see will probably see this kit from the states and question it, but Chris from SBD has been super in his feedback. He has recently released new gen 2 manifolds, new BOV, a Garrett upgrade which I am tempted to do next year and a new intake upgrade ( I chose not to seeings I went with a big K&N intake). The kit is being improved and refined constantly and it has been selling brilliantly for the 2 years it has been on sale. There are plenty of owners in Australia running them with RHD on the Facebook group I joined and so installation should be very easy with no compatibility issues. I am certainly looking forward to it!

Great numbers for a very hot day! I can't wait for my turbo to arrive now

It is a shame that before I take my manifold off next week you didn't get a run in my car James to hear what a fully catless UEL system sounds like, should have nudged me at Japfest and we could have nipped out! To be honest I have been running a catless setup for months now and I find it absolutely hilarious! Tunnels are brilliant fun, narrow B Roads with overlooking trees give back a lovely reverb and in general the car just sounds like a raw animal! A lot of the drone at motorway speeds is really manageable when you are just cruising and even my Dad on the way down to Goodwood last weekend was pleasantly surprised at how much hearing he had left when we got there! It is a trade off after all, but different strokes for different folks! I personally think you are going to love it mate and you'll definitely have upload a few sound clips when you've bolted on my manifold!

So was it the bonding material that has literally melted away Rob?

Chris Evans announced as TG presenter

To be honest, I will still end up watching their new Netflix show when it comes about. Netflix know the audience those 3 provide, and the increase in revenue they will bring will be massive. I also think that on Netflix, Clarkson Hammond and May will be a lot more experimental and interesting with their shows. They will be free from BBC restrictions, free from the PC brigade and therefore can have a blank canvas to work from. My gut feeling on how the shows got less and less interesting and dynamic was the fact that the BBC started having more say in how it was structured. Clarkson, from writing most of the show, had less and less input as the years went on.. you can see the change from earlier series. The BBC saw a show that was incredibly big, growing into the biggest entertainment show in the world, and therefore wanted to moderate it's growth more and more. This is just my opinion though. I expect when their own new show comes around it will be a lot more interesting than the last couple of series of Top Gear on the BBC. -
Mmmm two ZX12 engines bolted together to make a screaming 2.4L V8! Hugely similar to what Ariel did with the Atom V8! Reminds me a bit in sound to the old Judd V8 engines that screamed! As Sonic says though, it is going to be pretty hefty price wise! What a project it would be though!

The only person who could have pulled it off was Tiff N, but I'd doubt he would have returned to the BBC and he is committed still to 5th gear..Chris Evans is a proper car guy but will he be appealing to the masses? Jeremy only annoyed DM readers really.. Chris Harris is another awesome car reviewer and journo.. But his YouTube content is top notch and hes found a platform he enjoys! Plus his channel is free -
Just thought I would share an onboard of my favourite Group B car, doing what it does best some 30 years on after it was banned! Listen to that V6 scream!
-
Between that and the Group A E30 Rally Car On Tarmac rallies it was a beast

I would say it is worth travelling far if you know your car is going to be treated properly. Will be well worth the extra expense knowing you've been given the best service possible. But if RA Motorsports are in Scotland, you might as well give them a call and see what they can do for you!
-
You've just entered the slippery slope of modifying Adam, you'll never be able to escape now! And yes anything over -320hp ish your are much better off forging the engine internals for both reliability and increasing the engines potential power wise!
-
The car looks absolutely brilliant buddy, you must be so chuffed with the finished outcome?
-
I'm just gonna dust off my £30 pop up Tesco tent I used for Resding festival like 5 years ago haha!
-
Fantastic news about the car Keith, it's been a long time coming after weeks of frustrating issues surrounding the car and the autobox.. I'm not sure ill be able to attend any TSS events this year, but are you bringing the car to any shows later on in the year? I echo those above, I'd love to see a few photos and videos of the car now in its MANIAC guise

Love it! I also got a complimentary 86 t shirt from my brother for Christmas last year!
-
I guess you have me there buddy What I guess I was supposed to say is that I want to use it as a complimentary item alongside the N/A modifications I want to do. It is half the price of a conventional FI system and therefore I can focus some of those funds on tampering with the engine itself. Having read through a big chunk of the 403 page thread on the FT86 club forum, it does seem to fill a lovely void in the market for those who don't want the hassle of a big FI install but want a bit more power. Plus the kit appears to be on a continuation development type path, where improvements are being made all the time, whether it be the batteries, fixings, or software. I am still awaiting an email response from them, and have also contacted the tuner he uses in the states to get a bit more feedback on the kit. Wait times are quite long it appears, but once I get some initial feedback I would be happy to wait. Just means I get more time to tamper with the car in N/A form ready for when it is my turn.
