Yes this is completely different to your run of the mill knock off made Ebay Supercharger, which as you say have been around for yonks with no benefit... Rather than a full blown FI setup, I think of it more as a complimentary boost, which if tuned right can give you some awesome numbers. Do I really need 300hp at the wheels if I am running aggressive gearing that a full FI setup will give? On the road and in mixed conditions I think i'll just be spinning through gears 1-4 constantly. My aim was always to stay N/A, and I will invest money in upgrading the engine components whilst N/A, but I see this kit as the perfect complimentary item to help fill that void between power and usability, whilst keeping the nature of the car. Whilst it isn't driven by the engine, and instead by electronics, the power delivery is similar to that of a twin screw Sprintex for example. The Phantom kit gives you a big chunk of boost low down (2.5-4k) and then it slowly tapers off as you reach the redline. Here is a picture from the thread on FT86 Club of a dyno run from a car fitted with the new kit to show how smooth the torque curve is now. It has a very conservative map for 91 Octane or our 95 RON equivalent fuel and the car has some light exhaust modifications: Note: bottom line is the baseline figure with a stock car for reference.

Hmmm I'll see what the guy has to say any way.. I think his name is Rob?? The new V2 kit that has just been released posseses more powerful batteries that obviously allow for greater boost.. 230 at the wheels on a conservative map with a lightly tuned car was well within reach when looking through the latter part of the thread if I recall? On the old kit, on a totally stock car with no modifications it was putting out just under 200hp to the wheels, which is on the first page of that thread I think? So I don't see why it should seem out of reach with the new more powerful version, especially with a great custom map, a couple of engine mods and a good quality EL manifold which I'll be switching to soon.

No worries Nige, I'll put it in simpler terms for our older readers MCB = master cylinder brace and ESC = Electric Suoercharger Basically I've been a lazy sod recently and haven't managed to fit the master cylinder brace I got from Laile! After speaking to you the other day at great length I decided to do a bit of research.. I still want to do a bit of tampering to the motor, like change the valve springs, and potentially upgrade the intake manifold, but I also want to compliment that stronger motor with Phantoms Electric Supercharger... Basically utilises some batteries to send charge through an electric controller and then on to a electric Supercharger to create a set amount of boost, around 5psi.. With a good custom map, full bolt ons and the kit you should expect 230-240hp at the wheels with the new V2 kit..hopefully with the N/A engine changes I can push that up to around 250hp which is the Magic Mark I want to hit with my 4.55 FD installed.. Whilst the kit can only deliver this power in bursts, around 2 minutes at a time when fully charged, it only takes a few seconds per use to then fully charge again. It is also 1/2 the price of other FI applications at around £1400 all in.. Phantom are still developing it, so I've emailed them for more info in getting the kit to the UK.. Wary whether it is compatible with RHD cars is all.. There is a waiting list as it has been very popular in the states for those who daily driver their 86.. That combined with the full bolt ons I have, plus light engine work would give me my perfect setup with aggressive gearing.. You can find more about it here Nige if you are interested.. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39719 And a picture of the kit here: Just waiting to hear back from them now in the next couple of days for a complete shipped price and waiting times

Well I think me and my old man will be travelling down on the Wednesday evening and staying in like a premier inn nearby? This just in order to get up early for when the gates open! We are aiming to be there for 7am before the mad rush starts! Not sure if we'll be going in my car or his E46 Schnizter M3 though? What's everyone else's plans?

    My Silver Project 86

So had a bit of a lull here recently as I'm saving up hard for a couple of big mods towards the end of the year! The first being some N/A engine modifications and the second being Phantoms ESC, I just need confirmation from them that it's compatible with RHD cars. I literally had zero time last weekend to fit my MCB, so if I find time this weekend I'll do it, but if not I'll just send it in with my 4.55 FD when that gets fitted. I am just waiting to finish the month first before I fit everything as I spent that money on an impulse buy most recently... Namely a GFB lightweight pulley kit courtesy of James H. Alas it finally arrived today after a bit of confusion from the courier. They are a bit dusty but after a good old clean they'll be ready to bolt straight on the car. As previously discussed I don't trust myself to do it, so will send them in with my FD and MCB to get fitted in 1 big go! Here are some pictures (excuse the quality): So by the start of July they will all be fitted and I look forward to feeling the difference! I will report back once I go for a drive and I will give some feedback guys!

That is what Ford does best though, cheap fast and reliable cars. In terms of bang for buck stretching back to the escort Cossie they have pretty much the market sewn up.. It's why there is such a massive following for fast fords past and present today. Parts are cheap, they can be tuned to go like stink and are cheap to buy!

To be honest both the Boxster and the Cayman are better handling cars than the 911 due to being mid engined, and makes for a more enjoyable drive. If they were given 911 kinds of power they would both be a better car and also faster, but then that would mean the 911 would become obsolete, which is why Porsche hold back. The only reference we have now is the new Cayman GT4 Which is probably only eclipsed by the turbo and GT3 currently. The Boxster was never supposed to rival the 911. They are not comparable and many people would prefer to drive one over a 911 due to its better poise and agility. Plus why bother buying a more expensive 911 when you can just buy a second hand Boxster and do a little flat 6 engine swap Save yourself a huge chunk of money and have 911 power in a better chassis! The 2.3 Eco boost motor will probably give you the best bang for buck! Best compromise of MPG, tax and running costs, plus you'll be able to tune them close to V8 speeds given they are turbocharged. Good luck Bumblebee

Good stuff mate, I have been lagging on brakes at the moment, but that is only because I haven't been on track. When you are on the road you cannot explore the braking capability like you can on a regular basis on the track, so it is is great to hear your feedback. Guess the feel through the pedal is a lot more confidence inspiring? A lot more bite or is it quite progressive with the DBA's? Oh that is awesome! Stage 4 AVO kit I am guessing then? Will watch this thread with great intent from now on then

One of the things that drew me to the car was it's size. So many so called sports cars and sports saloons are just ballooning in size! Just have a look at the likes of the new 4 series compared with the old 3 series coupe for example? Dwarfs it in size! The 86 is tiny, and it feels small and nimble on the road. I was at my grandparents the other day, and their neighbour is a bit of a petrolhead, he owns a modified FN2 Type R. I offered to let him sit in the drivers seat and he was amazed how low to the ground you feel. Pulling up in traffic on a regular basis you get a feel for this size and low seating position, as you have to look up to the hatchbacks sat next to you. I think that is what makes this car so great. In a world where cars in each generation get fatter, heavier and bigger, the 86 bucks that trend with a low centre of gravity, small dimensions and low 1250kg kerb weight.

    odd or normal?

Mine is a daily driver and also completely catless too, it all adds to the sense of occasion, the more noises to listen to the better! After putting on a heavy duty 6 puk clutch on the car I also have some new drivetrain noises to listen to now too

    Lightweight pulleys - how effective?

Hmmm interesting. I have already a lightweight flywheel fitted and a shorter FD sat in my room waiting to go on. I spoke to Adrian when I was at Fensport and he told me that there were many pre conceptions being made about how aftermarket pulleys were bad for the engines. He categorically told me that a lightweight pulley kit combined with a lightweight flywheel should do no long term damage to the car. Even on his turbo build he has combined both of them with a lightweight prop too and has found no issues whatsoever so far, and that car is being pushed to the limit. On his advice I have bought a lightweight pulley kit to compliment both the FD and the flywheel I have, and I am more than happy to play guinea pig for everyone. It seems a lot of the people who had trouble with their pulley kits in the states were down to them not correctly pitting the kit on in the first place. We know that bullshit spreads like wildfire on that forum and there are plenty too that have had no issues whatsoever. I trust Adrian to offer me the best advice for my car, and if he says its 100% fine to combine both then I am willing to bite the bullet.. Which I have! I also didn't think dampening was as important on a boxer engine compared with a standard 4 banger?
  23. JamesP1991

    odd or normal?

Hearing all that makes me feel awesome when I drive the car! Just makes me think back to the guys who got to drive the Group B cars, and all the different engine, drivetrain and running gear noises they made!

If Toyota did offer more power.......

Honda are just about to release the new NSX with a V6 hybrid engine drivetrain which will no doubt give an electric overboost function. I know we are talking about a different price range, but I still think a flywheel system could be implemented in the 86 for not a huge amount of money. A couple of small batteries to store energy under the drivers seat for best weight distribution, a flywheel gathering kinetic energy and a little button to deploy the energy stored Would be a lot lighter than the traditional KERS systems too. I know Williams did the same thing with the experimental hybrid GT3R Porsche race car. Smoked everyone at the Nordschleife until it broke down and then dominated it's class over in the ALMS.

If Toyota did offer more power.......

Yep I have emailed him a couple of times for advice as his time attack car was running reliably at 9k, although now it's boosted I think? 9k is a bit much to be honest, the valve springs are trash though and stop you running any kind of aggressive can profiles. He actually told me that if he were to do it again, he'd keep the bottom end including Pistons and rods stock and do more head work. As soon as he added the heavier Pistons and rods he felt that the balance wasn't there for N/A, although for boosted applications the added strength was needed obviously.
