Guilty pleasures. What would you give up your GT86 for?
nerdstrike replied to Nicebiscuit's topic in Non GT86/BRZ General Chat
I'd give it up for a lectureship at a worthy university. -
Nice! I always wondered how the Aero would look without the whaletail.

Wrote of a BRZ - Options to sell on... ?

If it's any consolation, being a relatively new car will make it easier to disassemble than the usual 9-year-old rusty bolt fests. -
I've seen yellowstuff disintegrate under heavy use, and they're a bit hard for general road too. I'd recommend looking elsewhere. I've heard good things about Performance Friction products, and had a pleasing personal experience with Hawk HP's for limited track and sporty use.

It wouldn't be a car forum without people finding franchise garages to be grossly negligent as well as expensive. Missing dipsticks, wrong oil filter, just not changing the things they've billed you for, replacing parts before they're due, charging £100 to plug in an OBD reader, but I haven't seen wobbly wheels until now!

Consequences of impending nearby construction
nerdstrike posted a topic in Non GT86/BRZ General Chat
A new block of apartments is going to be built just across from the house I rent. Necessarily this means abundant heavy machinery, earthmoving, construction crew, dust, rubble etc. I'm also rather terrified of my '86 getting dinged as the various machines manoeuvre their way around the narrow access road. Does anyone have any tips to help keep my car safe and scratch free from the inevitable fallout? I've considered a car cover, but I've heard of those doing more harm than good once something gets underneath them. -
GT86 BRZ Tuning Package from Tuning Developments
nerdstrike replied to Mike@TD.co.uk's topic in Tuning Developments
Very nice. One might say tempting, especially since you've gone to such effort documenting it. Permit me a few vulgar practical questions! 1. Any idea what kind of volume it'll make at a trackside static RPM noise test? 2. MOT pass, MOT scrape if hot, MOT likely fail? 3. Would you recommend the noise generator be kept or blocked off?- 231 replies

Muffle it with budgie smugglers?

I could also knock in the wall to the lounge and park the car in there. I suppose a very enthusiastic waxing might help keep the brick dust and such out of the lacquer. -

I hope It speaks volumes of the Cambridge housing market that my best bet might be to tough it out. -
Yes, that's exactly the wing for a warm sports-coupe! I think this would have to be backed by many psi of boost to justify its existence.

Do tell, I've only found BRZ teardowns so far. I guess they have greater need to replace the head unit.

Massive structural butchery required! I think they could market this differently: Want more induction noise? Feed the inlet manifold into the cabin.

@rob275 - you and I have a very similar mouse history. I loved my Intellimouse until it was hideously discoloured and filthy, then I moved on to Deathadders. A brief dalliance with a Logitech mouse ended soon enough. I cleaned up the switches on it but it was only a temporary fix for wild clicking. For work I use a MS natural keyboard which has kept me pain free for a decade, but they're hopeless for gaming.

TOYOTA GT86 (STAGE 4) - OVER 18K SPENT ON MODIFICATIONS

Sounds like someone is training to be a vet, or other medical specialist. Good luck with it! -
I like the black stripes in the background.

A side effect of the puny battery would be it struggling to start after sitting for a week or two. The power draw to run the keyless entry and alarm systems takes its toll over time.

There are quite a few situations on the road (or around the cones) where you're not going to drop to 1st and could use some extra poke. I have tried to heel-toe down into first before on my last car, and it felt abusive, even when I think I got the rev match. In any case, there's a definite justification for removing that dull patch when you decide you're going to go for it and it takes a while to spin up. You can work around it, tolerate it, but I think it's nice to smooth out the weakness, as well as get a bit more fizz at the top.

Examine the tyres closely to see how much spanking they've taken. If heavily rounded, or surface tears then they've been drifted. Not fatal, but you might be able to find one that hasn't been worked as hard. Also BRZs are few, you won't have a lot of choice.

I guess it fills the role of technology demonstrator well. The 3-cylinder mini engine in there is always going to come up shy on power at high speeds, so it would seem that the electric motors stop delivering full torque beyond a certain point. As for the price, it's playing in the company of very mature platforms aimed at discerning customers. I wouldn't be surprised if BMW had to skimp on the trim to pay for the fancy drivetrain development and carbon bits. I'm glad it exists, but not for the likes of us.

Hopeful future BRZ owner, need some advice
nerdstrike replied to Ben halliwell's topic in GT86/BRZ General Chat
The '86 is communicative, has a (too) safe default stability control system, and needs to be worked hard to get lots of speed. I think it's very good starting point for RWD ownership, and will shine a bright light on the qualities of any future car you might own. Many older alternatives will happily dump you in a ditch if not treated with respect. The rest is up to the driver. As for price, anything could happen with the continual rise of electric and self-drive vehicles. Cars like the '86 may become highly prized, or they may be made super-obsolete. Either way, circumstances change fast when you're young. -
31 on commute, 35 mpg pump to pump, 36.7 on the trip computer (which doesn't count stationary idling). More usefully, 300 - 360 miles range without dipping too far into the reserve. I'm spending £1000 a year less on fuel in this car than my last. I like this car, even if it is depreciating more than £1000 a year...

Evans is very irritating, Jordan is bland, but I did enjoy seeing a hugely expensive 4x4 clattering into rocks in the hands of a goon.

Ah droplinks. It's all about the plusgas my man.

I watched a bit of Extra Gear last night. It could be good with a bit more flow and banter. Harris' commentary is good, informed and lightly entertaining. With a proper counterpart he could be a great straight man, notwithstanding his skills at tossing cars around. I would rather watch an hour of Chris Harris on Cars, but I'll take what I can get. I have yet to see the main show. My expectations are low.
