Gearbox issue improved by thinner oil
Andrew Smith replied to Deanusrjm's topic in GT86/BRZ General Chat
I've never had trouble going from first to second but coming down from 3rd when it is cold could be a real pain. has always been fine in the summer months though. -

Gearbox issue improved by thinner oil

seems like each car has their own quirks, mines overpipe hitting the arb even though there is plenty of clearance. Engine mounts going in soon for added nvh -

What brand is yours? I have a powerflex road bush and apart from a little nvh at tick over it is pretty quiet -
Gearbox issue improved by thinner oil
Andrew Smith replied to Deanusrjm's topic in GT86/BRZ General Chat
The springs are around £40 and the insert was £30. Gear changes now feel very positive, like the feel of a rifle bolt and I dont get stuck coasting round junctions trying to find 2nd any more. -

+1. Just fitted the springs and a gearbox void insert and my 2nd gear woes are virtually gone. -
I don't know what the thermostat is rated at but good call, may be @Mike@TD.co.uk can shed a little light? I have sheet of acrylic that would be good for cooler blanking

Sitting in the pub, drinking pedigree and considering brake ducts, oil coolers, engine mounts and lightweight pullies. Track use in mind... any thoughts?
-
Thank you all so much everyone for your input, gives me plenty to think about. Pullies are off the table, I think unless the whole drivetrain is being lightened then the benefits would be marginal and the doubt that surrounds the crank pulley is enough to put me off. The Porsche brake ducts aren't really tempting me, just seems a little too much of a hack. The Verus kit looks good but I think, as was mentioned, at a price where really one has to start considering a brake upgrade... those APs do look and sound the business mmmm. For now I am going to try TDs own ducts. A good tidy fit and offer some help towards cooling. I am going for the hardrace engine mounts, made from a harder rubber they shouldn't add too much NVH and should stop my op issue. The quality of Hardrace appears to be well thought of and the price is fair. What I took from the oil temp discussion is that the oil is good for the higher temps but the oil pressure suffers. An oil cooler is going to be a win for me, lower oil temp helping keep the pressure up and longer stints on a track day. I'm going for the TD cooler kit, with its thermostat to help the oil run at a normal temp when in daily use.

Could probably make a butterfly valve with a servo, not sure what you would do with the back pressure though

Dont worry, Im not about to go there 👍

Fu k me @will300 I am not Rothchild 😲 Not a big fan of merica, call me old school but I would rather keep my groats in the UK. I have watched loads of before and after vids of stock v upgraded mounts and I think you are right. Our motors do seem to bounce around a lot while a stiffer mount cures a lot of that

I am hoping that we might end up at the same track day at some point as I would like you to take a few laps in my car and tell me what you think. We have pretty much the same set up ... tune, coilovers, geo etc. I dont think it is too far wide of the mark but then again I am a gentleman driver and not a racer. I didnt have any problems with my last car, which had the same set up, so I figure my problem is peculiar to this particular car. I do believe that the car is straight so I am thinking new mounts will sort it out. Not so bothered about harshness as I dont do a lot of miles, I would rather ride my motobike on the road as traffic jams then become irrelevent

@Rich says you were robbed 😛

@Deacon says you were robbed. But there has been an improvement?

The op and mani are TDs' and have been rechecked against another system for the correct size/shape etc. The car has been in a shunt before I got it but it was only a light shunt at the front and I can see no signs of damage, stress, twisting of anything. The only conclusion is that the mounts have prematurely gone bad. At Donny I had the problem of op vibration just after the brow of the hill at craner, on the apex at Starkeys Bridge and near the exit curb at the chicane, all left hand and all a compression area. Bit worried that the bomb hole in a couple of weeks is going to kill it. Standing starts are also a no no at the moment. I feel that I want to stay out longer as with my limited experience I want to get as many laps in as possible and get them most from a track day.. getting old and running out of time lol.

That's a bargin

@Lauren @KevinA The mounts are really to try and solve a problem I have with the overpipe hitting the arb. After jiggling around the various flanges and then finally hitting the offending area of the op with a big hammer I am still getting the op hitting the arb. I put a transmission mount bush in the other day just to see it that would help... it did but not enough to cure it unfortunately, so I feel the last resort is to fit stiffer mounts. I have read of one or two instances of this in the states but the fix has never been posted as far as I can see. The oil cooler I really think would be beneficial to me, I saw temps of 127 the other day, a cold wet day. This is too high for me. On a summers day it is going to sky rocket and really I would like to spend more than a couple of hot laps out at a time. I think the pullies could be good maybe with a light prop shaft just to make the engine a little perkier but all the undocumented problems that forums talk of is off-putting, much confusion here I feel.

I am just looking at the TD ducts, direct fit, just bolt up and go and seems fair at £42. I haven't had much fade in the 7 track days I have done but I have come to realise after last Monday that I am getting more comfortable with getting the car moving around, later braking and generally just being quicker.

Is the gt86 good and what to look for when buying a used one.
Andrew Smith replied to Gt86life's topic in Newbies
As you are in Manchester, get yourself over to RRG in Macc. These guys are great with 86s'. Leave the intake as is and just get a panel filter. If you want to get the best gains get this www.tuningdevelopments.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=502_625_632&products_id=2567 a lot of us already run this set up -

Driveshaft Shop Propshafts - In Stock GT86 or BRZ
Andrew Smith replied to Mike@TD.co.uk's topic in Tuning Developments
I had this problem on my old car, iirc at 100 to 110mph it vibrated a lot and then smoothed out again. After the fix It appeared at around 110 to 112mph and then smooth again. Take these speeds with a pinch of salt but you get the idea. The Fix. You need to index the shaft and this is done by unbolting the shaft at the diff end and rotating it to the next bolt hole. Bolt it up and go for a test drive and see how it is. If there is no improvement then repeat the process until you find the best position. -
Just like you say apart from the cruise control. Just done the shifter springs and gearbox insert and it has improved 2nd gear significantly.
