Whining diff (was actually a wheel bearing)

Well the good news is you will get it covered under warranty. It's not particularly cheap! Maybe they should have done what RRG did and put it up on the lift and got the wheels rotating under drive as you could fairly easily hear it on mine when I put my ear relatively close to the spinning wheel. Still, I suppose you got a diff oil change early! Mine is easily the highest mileage car RRG service so it's often the case that it's a first on mine. I do have the advantage of Gary though.

Whining diff (was actually a wheel bearing)

How many miles has your car done, now Nigel? Also which bearing has gone? Did Motorline Gatwick not do a diagnosis then? You would have thought they would have been able to tell. Just had mine done. It's a lot quieter now.
  3. That was my feeling too, so I opted not to use it. It seemed to drag the clutch and well I'm trying to see how many miles I can get out of the original clutch, it's almost become a challenge now. I normally launch the car manually at around 2.5K trying my best not to ride the aforementioned clutch.
  4. Yeah, I might try it. Is the limiter for it defined already? There's no way I can sit there with my foot down bouncing off the rev ilmiter. I do wonder how advisable this is on a clutch that's done over 110K miles!

    Brake upgrades - discs/pads?

Cool. Depending on the pad, I have DS2500's I ran them in in around 20 minutes. Just accelerate hard and brake harder and harder typically braking from 100mph down to 60 or so and repeat 30 odd times. Find a quiet dual carriageway at night. Once you can smell them, you're done.
  6. Launch control, flat foot shifting and auto throttle blip are all gimmicks anyway. I opted not to have the throttle blip at all as I simply don't need it. I have flat foot shifting and launch control on two of the maps. Tried flat foot shifting once, didn't think it was kind to the car so never used it. Launch control I've no idea how to use so never bothered. I do though have Map 3 as a full power map but with reduced throttle sensitivity as Mark found it hard to control as it's pretty sensitive on the first two maps. Ironically he's not on my insurance anymore.

    Just saying hi

In terms of what I love about my GT, I would say driving it hard round the track. But equally as much if I'm in the Alps or round the EVO Triangle. I just love the drive. My first mod was a Milltek exhaust/Injen induction kit as I specified them when I ordered the car new, so they were on it when I picked it up. The Milltek has gone as they crack, but the Injen is still there.

    Your Fuel Economy?

I do everytime I fill up. It's normally somewhere between 32-35mpg. On a bit Euro trip of 2.5K miles round the Alps and back I averaged 37mpg. It's worse if I'm just driving around town though, will see about 30mpg, but given my commute has 10 miles of motorway that puts it up a bit to around 33mpg or so. But I do a lot of short journeys for work so I'm always starting up from cold driving a mile and a half then stopping again. It doesn't help it really.

    Much the same really.

    Jane's dipped interior

It does look smart, though I'm not of the boudoir type. Do you get issues with reflections off it?

Welcome aboard. There is a wider variety of spec available in Japan, what did you go for?

Gearbox issue improved by thinner oil

They will say it's a characteristic of the car and well, it is. For something that is only an irritation for the first five minutes of driving when you need to select second from third it's really not worth worrying about.

When you described yours as noisy I just couldn't believe it. I had the Whiteline insert put in nigh on five years ago now. I never noticed any real difference with noise.

It should be fine when it's warmed up a little after a few minutes of driving though. Everyone has this.

    Thinking of a project car

I honestly think that an MX5 will seem like the poor relation to your GT and it will never surpass it. Rather than waste money on a project car, spend it on your GT and make it better and enjoy that. You can learn very well how the GT handles and do all that tuition stuff on track if you so wish. Take out insurance if you're worried about it. The GT will eclipse a MK1 MX5 in every way. You've got a car that you can tune and develop and still use as a daily car, why not just do that? I had an AE86 for 6 years. Spent loads on it. Trouble was the GT was just in a different league in every way so I never drove it much in the end. Which is why I sold it and just put my efforts into the GT. I'm glad I didn.

I'd wonder if the car was really that cold when you picked it up. The difficult into second when coming down from third scenario seems to be ever present for me whenever it is cold in the morning. It soon sorts itself as soon as there is a little heat in the drivetrain and typically is fine after a few minutes. It's been that way for the last five years and 110K+ miles.

    Upgrading Headunit for sound quality?

I thought the stock sound system was shite I still think it is. I tried the JBL but wasn't impressed with it. In the end I went for a £3K install. I had all this fitted along with dynamat on the boot floor and in the door panels a month after I got the car new. I have an Alpine INE-925R HU (with DAB and satnav), Focal 3 two way speakers with the tweeters cut into the top of the door panels. I have a Hertz Amp running three channels, with a 12" JL sub in the boot and an Audison Bit 10 DSP. The whole boot floor has been replaced with MDF and fibreglass. It's not removable and I've sprinted it for four years and done loads of track days. Not a problem. I didn't bother with the rear speakers as they are pointless. My system has a fair bit of power and that's what you need to cut through the road noise generated by the car. A decent helping of bass helps with this. Mine is a bit overdone in this respect and I only run the sub at a fifth of what it can do. The difference between stock and mine is astounding and it is as you'd expect light years ahead of the JBL. You'd expect it to be though, at that price. I do get problems with the bass of course if I turn it up, but I'm not one for hanging around McDonald's I just want quality audio in my car as I like my music a lot which really dictated how much I spent. 5 years later it still sounds amazing and I've certainly got my monies worth out of it after 110K+ miles.

    Possible new 86 owner Staffordshire

    Spec d headlight on a toyota gt86

HID = high intensity discharge lamps. These are much better than projectors with halogen bulbs. Projectors are the poverty spec lights found on lesser models such as US spec and lower spec GT86's in Japan. Yes RHD= right hand drive. I'll bet the ones you are looking at are US items which will of course be for LHD which is no good for you.

Welcome aboard. Do tell about the plans. What coilovers and wheels did you fit?

    Is...

It's a way of totally sorting it. £1500 is a lot, but really it's a bargain for what you get. The difference is astonishing. Now I can concentrate on my driving on track with total confidence in the brakes lap after lap.
