Aftermarket over pipe
ThatGuyThere replied to matrixprotein's topic in Wanted GT86 / BRZ Cars and Parts
I have one of these for sale (less shiny now though - was on the car for approx 10k miles). https://www.part-box.com/tomei-expreme-overpipe-toyota-gt86-subaru-brz-431104 -
Fuck that noise! Assuming it's not making you destitute and your heart's still in it I reckon you should keep going. Sorry it's been such a nightmare so far though, second thoughts are to be expected!

Here's a link to the manual - https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96932 So are you simply in need of a new belt?
-
I'm 6'5 with long legs and I found there to be loads of space all around. Much more than in similar cars and I found it to be one of the more comfortable cars I've driven/owned. Definitely not a wasted trip to test drive.

Is the GT86 going to be safe for my girlfriend?
ThatGuyThere replied to RS4 James's topic in Newbies
The traction control will abolutely keep you on the road, it very much errs on the side of safety. But I don't understand why you're buying a car for her to drive, that she doesn't want - she wants something tall, comfortable and a feeling of safety. A GT86 is none of those things and full of compromises which to someone who doesn't care about the thrill of driving are simply not worth it. Sounds like the car is being bought for you, and her needs are utterly irrelevant. Surely there's an *actual* compromise between a light-weight rear wheel drive sports car, and a Fiat Panda... -
Wanted: second Lambda/oxygen sensor
ThatGuyThere replied to ThatGuyThere's topic in Wanted GT86 / BRZ Cars and Parts
Bump. Figured there'd be a few kicking around as most aftermarket headers don't make use of the secondary one. -
Having swapped my aftermarket manifold back to a standard one, I am missing the secondary sensor. Anyone got one kicking around? Thanks in advance.

What supercharger? (Maybe turbo)
ThatGuyThere replied to chrisrussell's topic in GT86/BRZ General Chat
Interesting. Shame they don't accept the responsibility for their flawed design then. The decent thing would be to offer the revised replacement unit at cost price. Or, at a minimum reply to enquiries! The USA thread is full of awful examples of their customer service - if I remember correctly "HKS USA" closed down and reopened under new oenership at one point. -

You were great @Mark@Abbey M/S even though I was not your customer you helped me to diagnose which you had no obligation to do (the kit was fitted by a prior owner). I was refering to HKS - they don't even reply to enquiries and their best offer to people in USA with the same failure was to rebuild the SC kit but at a very high cost. They are still making the SC kit despite repeated failures and what seems to be a flawed design, yes. Again - I realise many have not had issues but I would recommend avoiding them due to the above issues that do not seem to apply to other options. -

My HKS supercharger failed in the same way as the ones on the USA forum. Customer service is non-existant. Avoid when there are many other tried and tested options with no horror stories attached. Of course many have had no issues - but when you look at he design it does seem to be hugely flawed, and I notice HKS are now supplying a turbo kit! It was amazing when it worked though. Made the car feel ridiculously light and fast, although the bottom/mid end is lacking compared to a turbo, which with the looooong gearing of the GT86 was sometimes an issue on country roads. My heavier, lower-powered previous car with a turbo delivered much more usable performance for overtaking and low-mid speed fun. -
I had one as my 2nd car, and fitted the obligatory 17" wheels. No lowering so it looked like a rollerskate I too had nothing to compare it to, so loved the thing! On reflection, it was probably slower than the 1989 1.0 Polo it replaced. Never has a 1.2 engine had less power!

I have the HKS oil cooler available, but I'm wanting £350 for it - figured I'd reply and let you know even though it's more than you said. Been on the car for approx 10k miles and in good condition. PM me if interested.

OEM wheels, intake pipe, manifold, centre/back box
ThatGuyThere posted a topic in Wanted GT86 / BRZ Cars and Parts
Looking for wheels, intake pipe (not airbox), manifold, and centre/back box. Located in West Yorkshire. Have aftermarket parts which I'd be happy to exchange for any of the above, with cash my way - I'm returning mine to standard-ish to sell. -
Don't touch the HKS supercharger, it has a design flaw and HKS don't care! You could always get an eBay turbo I'd suggest just keeping an eye out for second hand kits - there was a supercharger sold on here for 2k in the last few months, which has to be the way to go if you want to keep prices down.

Having taken my GT86 off the road to put back to stock, I found myself looking for a cheap runabout. Ended up with a 2004 e46 325ti - yes, the ugliest BMW ever made. 190bhp, RWD, manual gearbox, £1200. It's amazingly fun. The GT86 was my first RWD car and I loved it, but it wouldn't see which way the BMW went on a bumpy country lane (of which we have many around here) due to much more compliant suspension, more accessible performance throughout the gears, and increased traction. This might be down to the clever electronics, which also are hugely better than the Toyota - the way the DSC keeps you going fast, rather than slowing your progress down makes thrashing it around endless fun. But obviously we're talking about cars that cost more then £2k here - I can't speak for newer BMW's, but as mentioned above the e92 M3 felt boring below 7k revs. My money will likely go on a Cayman S, although I too am tempted by the Evora! Cant go back from RWD regardless!

HKS Supercharger failed after less than 10k miles
ThatGuyThere replied to ThatGuyThere's topic in Mechanical
If you've got nothing nice to say... -
Hi Just wanted to share my experience with the HKS supercharger (V2). I bought a car with it fitted, and it failed shortly afterwards. It was fitted by experts, but the failure seems to be down to poor design inside the supercharger unit. I know there's a lot of people out there who have experienced similar, and of course many more who have never had an issue! That said, I'd strongly recommend avoiding this kit - the design is clearly not the best, and after-sales support non-existant. Many thanks for @Mark@Abbey M/S for his help diagnosing this, and a public apologiy for the delay in returning the Ecutek equipment he kindly lent me - sorry again Mark. So, car's going back to almost standard as I am looking to buy a house now so it's being sold - if anyone is interested in the HKS oil cooler, coilovers, rota titan wheels, HKS manifold, or a beautiful and immense-sounding exhaust, PM me. I'll be posting adverts and listing them on eBay shortly afterwards. Stupendous car while owning it - even after the SC failed, it was still an event driving every time - partly down to that exhaust

HKS Supercharger failed after less than 10k miles
ThatGuyThere replied to ThatGuyThere's topic in Mechanical
Making accusations? It's failed. I own it, I've seen it with my own eyes. It's a perfectly fair cop! To answer your question, it seems that the threading on the housing is just not capable of doing the job it is asked to do. Mine has failed in the exact same way as the photos in this thread: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89226&page=6 Seems many people have had the same issue. As there are other manufacturers offering different designs I would urge people to avoid the HKS unit alltogether. I did email HKS Europe and had no reply at all. Seems to be a running theme reading through that thread - HKS are to be avoided in this area. -
Yes you're insane. There are sooo many to chose from for much, much less. Depends how you're financing it and if you want a very specific spec of course. But just my opinion

In the process of diagnosing a supercharged GT86 - HKS kit. The impellor spins. The belt is tight. But seemingly no boost! Following a tip from Mark @ Abbey I looked at my Blow Off Valve. Visually seems fine. Although testing shows: At idle, it's open. Revving at stationary, it's remains open and more air comes through. So unless I'm misunderstanding - I have zero chance of boost building, as it just goes straight out through the valve. But unless the springs have somehow worn within the valve (they look fine) and with no sign of leaks from the thin pipe running to the intake manifold - I'm not certain where to look next. Should it be open at idle, and remain open while revving? Image shows an HKS BOV - not mine, but identical.
-
Can anyone advise on ways for me to monitor boost? I'm thinking OBD2 reader and android app... advise on either appreciated
-
Wow, that would be amazing Mark! I'll PM you.
-
Excellent, many thanks Yes, it's supercharged. I'll pick up a cheapy eBay unit.

Sorry should have stated - only want it as a diagnosis tool - not wanting to do anything permanent
