    Rotational Squeaking from Discs?

    Rotational Squeaking from Discs?

Mine (stock) where squeaking before I replaced the discs and pads. The old pads and calipers were so clogged with brake dust, it took several minutes of hitting the pads with a hammer to remove them from the calipers. They clearly weren’t retracting from the discs causing the squeaking. When I replaced the discs / pads, the OEM Toyota pad kits came with copper grease, which I applied to back of pads, and pad/caliper contact points. I’ve had no noise since. I can imagine the grease will get clogged again over time but good so far.

    GT86 Crash Stevenage

350Z was going way too fast for a street lined with people. 86 would have had poor visibility due to spectators; not an excuse but makes it more difficult for him to leave safely. Sounds like he was trying to drift out though so he was also playing his part in the chaos. Its not just at shady evening car park meets this happens. It’s similar some of the bigger shows and organised meets like Buleigh, Goodwood. Less so at Silverstone due to police presence however even there I saw an MX5 spin off the road half a mile from leaving this year. Thankfully no spectators involved. It’s all meant to be good fun, but easy to see how things occasionally go wrong. I know what side of the junction I’d be standing on...
  4. PoorBoys Black Hole is a glaze, so if you just apply it and no sealant / wax on top, it probably won't past a wash or two. It's good stuff to use before waxing / sealing. Autoglym UHD has great gloss on dark colours and lasts around 3 months in my experience. I've also got Soft99 Fusso, which has great longevity (6-12 mths) and looks good, but not quite as good as UHD. If you don't want to wax regularly worth considering Fusso or a ceramic coat. Forensic Detailing on YouTube for good product tests. If you want to properly geek out on this stuff Pro Detailer Magazine is worth a look.

    Rear Caliper Options

I've read on quite a few posts that the rear's don't need to be upgraded, just the fronts. I struggle to get my head around that. My car just reached 40k and all of my pads and discs needed replacing. Both the front and rear discs were at minimum thickness (-2mm from new). If you only upgrade the fronts, I assume you will replace the rear discs and pads several times for each set of fronts. Do you live with that because they don't overheat on a track day, and that’s the main concern? I'm not sure how they don't overheat... The rear pads have a smaller surface area, on (practically) the same diameter disc. On my car both fronts and rears eroded the discs at a similar rate. The rear pads were even more dead than the fronts as well. That suggests to me they may even get hotter than the fronts… Anyway, jealous of the OP. 👍 I toyed with the idea of an upgrade but couldn’t quite justify the cost. Especially I’d really want both ends done, for cosmetics if nothing else. And I’d need wheels. And Coilovers. Enjoy your BBK!!

    Steering Buzzing Noise

Hi, strange one. There is a buzzing noise coming from within the dash when I turn right (steering wheel turned through 90 degrees or more) at speeds over 25mph. Doesn't happen when I turn left. Doesn't happen when travelling slowly or stationary. It also only seems to appear as the car gets up to temperature. I believe the power steering motor is somewhere in the dash, and it does sound like an electrical buzz. Just a little confused that it only buzzes in certain circumstances. No noticable impact on the effectiveness of teh power steering... yet. Car is 16 plate so not subject tot he PS recall I don't think. I'll take it into the dealer but would be good to go armed with some knowledge. Any ideas?

    Radio

I did a significant overhaul of the stereo as well, but kept the stock HU. I can only compare it to the stock setup which was awful, not an aftermarket HU, but I'm very happy with how it sounds even with the stock HU. An aftermarket HU would almost certainly sound better but I'm unsure by how much and I prefer a stock look on the dash. I've since looked at upgrading to the Kenwood HU's that don't require a bezel, but thats another £1400 installed (with DSP re-tune) so don't think I'll bother. I'm an apple user and the fact that carplay only works with Apple Maps (not google maps) was also a turn off. If I could rewind, the main change I'd make is adding more sound proofing to the back of the door cards as I do now have some vibrations at some frequencies and high volumes (they weren't there when I finished the build). Maybe a summer job this year.

    Red budget build

Re detailing, you would want to spend £200-£250 on equipment, pads and polishes. More of you wanted to do multiple stages. It took me 20hrs to do prep, 2- stage correction and protection. It wasn’t all plain sailing. A year on, and even with very careful washing, I feel it needs another skim, but I can’t find the motivation to do it again. £400 is a good deal given effort involved, especially if it’s a multi-stage correction.

    Worst Car Ever Driven

Merc A180 hire car. Felt like every instruction (speed up, slow down, please turn) had to go through governance before being accepted. Maybe it was just in the wrong ‘mode’. Had a rover 75 for a while which was similar. But it was an old barge so i expected it. Merc should have been better. Had a few Citroen C1’s. Loved them. No power so you use all of it all the time. All about conserving momentum. No drive by wire. Same reasons Chris Harris loves his 2CV.

    Replacement HU choice..

I'm tempted to replace my HU, but I don't think I could live with fascia adapters. The only ones I've found from reputable brands (not sure I'd go for Joying) seem to be for the Australian market http://www.kenwood.com/au/car/visual_navigation/ddx916ws/ Good luck with your search.

    JW191 Custom Audio Build

Cheers, yeah I'm very happy with the way it turned out. You lose about 6cm of boot depth, but I've rarely go a need to transport much in the 86. The boot pieces all lift out if I did need the space back temporarily.
  19. Can you post a couple of links to YT and I'll see if its the same thing?
  20. Interesting, I have this on my 86 and concluded it was the release bearing. I know not to ride the clutch but my car is ex-demo so can't vouch for previous treatment (I'd rather not think about it)! Doesn't always happen, and I've only noticed it when the car is cold after the cold start completes, which makes me question the overheating bit. The service bulleting does suggest human error as the cause though, so wouldn't surprise me if they said no to warranty. Do Toyota and Subaru share these things with each other? I'm confident my dealer and Toyota UK are clueless about the GT86. You wouldn't believe how many Toyota techs I had to argue with about the Scorpion alarm; they thought I fitted it myself! Edit: 16' plate 14k miles

    I'm new here

Hi, I'm new here. Newbies seemed like a good place to start. Had my 16' Stock Black GT86 for a few months now. I live in Hampshire. Obligatory pic: Looking forward to learning more and maybe see some of you at meets.

    Gaming Thread

Yeah, PD2 is best with friends, when you're all on chat having a laugh. When you know you're way around it's quite good fun to show new players how to complete the levels. But yes, a lot of the public games are chaos and that could easily put you off. Got a few racing games but not played them for a while.

    Gaming Thread

Didn't expect to see a gaming thread, but why not Rig was good when I built it 4 years ago, but starting to struggle with newer titles. I don't play much PvP, because I'm not good enough. In the last 12 months mainly been playing Elite Dangerous, TC R6 Siege, TC Ghost Recon Wildlands, The Division, PAYDAY 2. Long term, PD2 is definitely the one I've sunk the most time into (880Hrs ). Currently looking through the Steam Summer Sale - Always dangerous!!
