First, I was getting sick of the unlined glove box being a rattle echo chamber for whatever I had in it that didn't have a soft surface, so I got some A4 self-adhesive felt - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Self-Adhes...2&cmd=ViewItem. A4 is exactly the right width, and also allows room to do most of the horizontal surface in there (it wraps around nicely). I got a spare sheet given how cheap they are to do the sides (haven't got round to that part yet) and while I went for boring black, there are plenty of other colours available on ebay to match your car if you wish.Next I got some of this vibration dampening cheaper alternative to Dynamat - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1511201779...84.m1439.l2649 - and have found that just lining the spare wheel well makes a good difference (particularly with a non-resonated exhaust!) to the sounds/vibrations from the back. When I get time I intend to put a bit under the rear seats and wheel arches, although self-adhesive sound absorbing felt may be better for those areas due to its lighter weight compared to this rubber based material - has anyone else experimented here?

Pitman - yes, that is why I am looking for UK stock as it can be a bit of a lottery if you are unlucky to have had your parcel from the US or Japan checked and have to pay VAT, import duty and royal mail documentation charges (although you could be lucky - they don't check 'em all!). That said, there are quite a few brands for things like this that you see on US and Japanese sites, but don't appear to be available from UK sellers, which while it may not mean they are any better than what you can easily get here it adds a certain exotic rarity value in my shallow eyes. As to the Cusco version with the brake brace thingy, does one actually make that much difference? I thought it doesn't actually give any more braking power, just makes the pedal feel a little more immediate?

Free winter wheels and tyres with new BRZ
Captain Duff replied to LFA's topic in GT86/BRZ General Chat
I wonder what brand of tyres they are using, or maybe there will be a variety? Anyways, seems like a nice deal when you factor in storage etc. which is great for those without a garage. -
So now we will no longer need tax discs next year (assuming the find out a way of letting us as well as the police know when a car is taxed, like when you buy one s/h), what are we all going to use those posh machined aluminium or carbon fibre tax disk holders for?! www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-25223631

I would like to like it, but it just looks ugly to me. Is the pricing likely to be similar to the GT-R? If so, and if I had the money given the GT-R is still likely to be a lot faster and also be more reliable I would be looking East rather than West...

RIP Paul Walker (Fast and Furious)
Captain Duff replied to Bumblebee's topic in Non GT86/BRZ General Chat
I'd honestly never heard of him. There again, I've never seen (to the best of my knowledge) any of his films... -
It's a trade off Lauren, and yes, it's about weighing the odds. However I remember that Auto Bild did a test the other year that indicated that while winter tyres were around 10% less effective than summers in warm weather, conversely summer tyres were 50% less grippy when things got nasty. In my case with only one car that has to get me around regular trips across Lancashire and Cumbria for work it's a no brainer and I wouldn't risk not having the winters fitted, particularly on a rear-wheel drive car. Even in the Octy vRS with front wheel drive I was convinced of the merits of winters when a bit of ice on a side road with a slight incline coming onto a main road led me to be unable to stop before sliding into the traffic on it (thankfully missing a taxi by inches).

Yes, I'm the same Alec, 5 Live and 6 Music are huge gaps for me as that's what I tend to listen to when I'm at home. Ok, yes you can get 5 Live on AM but the quality is iffy. And yes, the 'DAB ready' status on the Toyota Touch head unit is a huge mystery to me too as there doesn't appear to be any push by Toyota to get us to purchase a full DAB upgrade (so far as I know it is still not a dealer option on a new car), which is odd as quite a few other car companies now throw DAB in as standard on their new cars. And yes, I'm also fascinated to know how anyone with a UK spec GT86 has got DAB 'as standard' as opposed to having a 'DAB ready' unit!
-
How have you found the DAB reception quality, and did you need an additional aerial for it or is the OEM one good enough? Also on a more general point re DAB, is it going to be an option that can be added to the Toyota OEM Touch unit anytime soon does anyone know?

I'd be tempted by a wing like that if you got a stewardess thrown in for free

Californian BRZ vs Mustang comparison
Captain Duff replied to keelerad's topic in GT86/BRZ General Chat
Judging by the accent he is Australian, although clearly this was filmed in the US... -
It'll prob be to do with your cookies from the site getting removed by whatever PC/device you're using (virus/firewall software perhaps), you could try checking the settings there and putting this site into a safe list maybe?

Conversely do they extend to big fat bloke sizes too?! Also, I notice the pic is a white one but is there a coulour choice here - i.e., to match the colour of our cars

too much velvet, but the carbon looks good!

One of the advantages of going to 16" rims is that it tends to make a huge difference in price on the winter tyres themselves (compared to the differential between 16 and 17/18 summer rubber), and I went for an old set of 16" alloys for my winters on my Octy vRS (that normally ran 18" summers) due to this. I also had some Dunlop 4D's last year that were great. This time around with the GT I took advantage of the RRG deal on 17" oems with Yoko W-drives fitted as it was easier than messing around looking for a decent set of 16" rims on ebay and then paying extra for tyres to be fitted. Also, I tend to agree that the issue with winters is more to do with how narrow they are than the size of rims per se, and the standard 215 width of oem's is fine in my eyes. Anyway, I took advantage of a sunny morning and some free time to swap my wheels over yesterday (which went fine except I forget the fold up metal chocks around one wheel were still there when I drove afterwards and now one of them is more of a lie down design!). One thing I did wonder about though is tyre pressure. I've gone with the recommended one for the car (35psi / 2.4bar all round) but wondered if a little softer would be better? Mind you, doesn't pressure reduce naturally with temerature anyway, so once it starts getting really cold they will be softer?

Nothing too major thankfully, but a couple of issues that I don't know whether are natural for the car or an issue with mine:1. I get a rattle/buzz from the gear shaft (seems quite far down) when in 2nd and 4th (worse in 2nd). Not all the time, but often (doesn't make any difference whether car is cold/warm).2. Occasional lumpy idle/shudder (I know 4 cylinder cars are never smooth), and up and down revs in idle (between 500 and 900 rpm), not related to using aircon etc. Also I've noticed that sometimes when the engine is still reasonably cold at idle when stopped at lights the engine starts reving between 6-800 rpm in a regular up and down way and when my foot is nowhere near the pedal. I've never had warning lights, or a stall.Any thoughts would be welcome (car is currently stock).

http://www.theguardian.com/environme...tric-car-videoOk, so it's too big and boring looking, but a huge range, plug in any normal socket charge ability and a 0-60 in under 5 seconds makes it very attractive - and I have never said that about an electric car before. Yes, it will be expensive, but these things will get loads cheaper in time, and a coupe with a 0-60 in that sort of time would tempt many I think, although you would probably need to get an a recorded loud intake/exhaust sound to play through the audio system

In terms of the buying process Loco my tips would be the following:1. Look at the current internet broker discounts for the spec you want on a site like Drive The Deal (whose cars come directly from main dealers).2. Do a screen print of the DTD price and take it with you to your local dealer.3. Don't expect to be able to have your broker price matched exactly (dealers have justified extra costs, and at the end of the day dealer netowrks are important), but it gives you a starting position, and you may get close (I did).4. Be careful about what 'extras' you want and are sold. Eg, in my opinion Supagard is a waste of money unless you get it heavily discounted (I did) as often a local detailer with a good rep will do a far better paint seal job if you don't have the time/confidence to do it yourself. Alternatively a few layers of carnuba wax is in my opinion just as good anyway, and an easy/cheap DIY. Alternatively you can get the full Supagard kit on ebay for a fraction of dealer costs (or try the Autoglym Lifeshine as a good - possibly better - alternative).5. The dealer fitted option of an armrest centre console cover is well worthwhile and reasonably cheap (there should be no labour charge). Mudguards are also worth considering as they do keep it a bit cleaner a bit longer.6. Consider GAP insurance, but shop around (and don't pay more than a couple of hundred at the very most for 3 years of cover - you should be able to get it cheaper).7. I think all the colours look good on this car, but a very experienced bodyshop paint sprayer told me that the Toyota pearl white is an absolute bugger to match/blend if you ever need touch up paint repairs, while as has been stated the black is a bugger to keep clean.8. I like leather seats (particularly with any young children in the car who like chocolate!), but at £1,600 for effectively two of them (the back 'seats' don't count!) I think that they are really overpriced. Besides the cloth on the standard seats is actually really nice quality and on a red car in particular the red shoulder inserts in the cloth look great I think. Plus of course cloth is warmer in the winter and less sticky in the summer.9. Practce your smile face muscles before purchase - you'll need them a lot after you drive away

So inbetween GT's Richard are you allowed to really kick up some dust by taking home a Yaris :flossy:

Spotted: New Blue BRZ at Bicester Park
Captain Duff replied to Keethos's topic in GT86/BRZ General Chat
More to do with the miniscule Subaru dealer network I would suggest in comparison with Toyota. Add to that the (probably linked) issue of (I believe) less dealer discount being available which mattered less last year when there was little discount at Toyota but does now when it is relatively easy to get £2k plus GT86 discounts (also unlike the GT86 you can't source the BRZ directly via larger brokers like Drive the Deal) and you begin to see the problem. -
This seems to explain the potential causes of squeeling quite well - http://www.aa1car.com/library/tr996.htm

Just received the following email from my old Skoda dealer (from when I had an Octy vRS) - seems something of a bargain and I'm tempted to look at the small print to see if you HAVE to come with a Skoda, as it would be great turning up in the GT wouldn't it :DWe have just 10 customer places available on our SKODA Trackday Experience which is being held at Anglesey Race Circuit on Friday 8th November. You're invited to join us for, what we hope, will be a fun and action packed day for the discounted price of just £89 inc VAT per car. 2nd drivers go free!SKODA, in association with Javelin Trackdays, have reserved the whole circuit for our exclusive use on the day which will ensure that everyone gets plenty of 'track time' action.
