    An old-fashioned conversation...

Congrats all....I never had to have that conversation as my ex-wife's father had passed away when she was a child. I will never have to have that conversation as a Dad as both my children are male (at the moment).
  3. Subaru UK have just confirmed to me by phone that they are unable to source this part....so it looks like japanparts and a long wait for me again.... why do I want stuff that needs importing all the time?
  4. This particular part attracts me as it is manufactured by the OEM rather than some back room botch job.

    GT86 Drivers Club Hoodies!

I thought you'd said the future was black? If it's grey I'd prefer a black one now. Have they been sent out yet?- I'm getting cold.
  6. Hi all I have not done any car audio stuff for a very very long time. I decided to upgrade the 86 system with the OEM AUDIO+ CF400 reference system. http://www.shop.oemaudioplus.com/86-BRZ-International-Reference-400CF-GT86-REF400.htm;jsessionid=902F3AE76B3899916B9376BD1F97F17C.m1plqscsfapp06 This arrived, after a lengthy wait via USPS from LA, this morning. I think the box of bits might be too big to take home in the boot of the 86! i wasn't expecting that. Anyway I thought I'd blog the install so i can identify any problems that an 'audio newb' like me might have with such a kit. More to follow when I get it home somehow and unpack it.

I might get to TSS @ Woodbridge as a spectator if you're doing that or failing that rob's BBQ if you're going to either of those then I will be happy to demo it.Bring your own source material as unless you're into 80s indie or modern trance or blue note jazz I won't have much to interest you. Oh and James, I think the white cable you refer to is part of the airbag system. If you look in the manual it seems there is a drawing of where all the airbags are and the routing of the airbag wiring loom.

Could it be the press stud on the passenger seat belt guide? i have found that that rattles like a bastard. I used to hear something like that but only in left handers...drove me nuts then it just stopped one day.

The job is done and the audio is transformed! The door speakers that came out are pants, flimsy 4ohm things with a feeble magnet and probably really poor sensitivity. The door speakers that went in are 2ohm carbon weave coned things with relatively large magnets.... The sound is immense in comparison. I'm in a band with one of the guys in Above & Beyond so I have a lot of trance in my collection (!!!).* I stuck Group Therapy on the iPod and gave things a shot. At volumes over 30ish on the T&G HU the rear view mirror goes blurry from the sub!!!! At volume 40 earplugs are IMO necessary but there's no distortion! Still no distortion at volume 50 but you can't hear yourself think and everyone will hear you coming! The frequency response is clear across the whole range from car shaking sub 100Hz through to 14kHz+ (I am not a dog) This kit , despite its slight difficulties in fitting (see posts above), is awesome! The car should've come like this in the first place! Right I think that's it for mods for me for now - I need to stop throwing money at the thing and just enjoy driving it! *although that's definitely NOT what our band plays

6.5" door speakers on car specific(I believe) 3 point brackets but they can't be transplanted from one speaker to the next 1" tweeters in dash on car specific mountings, not sure if these could be transpalnted from one speaker to the next Our cars seem not to have been fitted with the 4" mids on the dash even thought the grille looks like they should be there. The permadrizzle has stopped!!! HURRAH!! Plan to skive off early this pm to do the doors (at last). Not driven the 86 all week (withdrawal setting in proper) as one of the doors is in a state of disassembly....

It's good to hear that it's not only me..... I left the windows and mirror connectors connected as there is enough space to get a short screwdriver in to remove the speaker. I'm not going to unplug anything I don't have to.

Rain stopped play again.... I have power and all the interior trim back on and I have tried it but not changed the door speakers yet. I got the door card off but can I unplug the connection to the existing speaker? Not a chance and yes I do realise you have to poke the locking tab in at the end of the plug to release it from the socket.......20 minutes and raw fingers and everything getting wet. I decided to call it a day....so the door card is only loosely fitted to the door and the appropriate tools are on the driver's seat as a reminder that it's not all done yet.....I did give it a try with the new tweeters and the sub but I imagine the door drivers are necessary for full effect. The sub seems very boomy and is very much in the sub 100Hz range.....I did try with an old rave favourite Dance Tones and it was like goping back to the early 90s dumph dumph cars (only i will know what I'm on about).....anyway I justr wish this rain would sod off and Toyobaru electrical connectors wouldn't be so damned obstinate.....

SUCCESS OK so what I did. I cut a straight length of old coat hanger about 6 1/2" long. To this I taped some old kite string. I twisted the 2 yellow wires together then firmly secured the kite string to the wires and wrapped the join in insulating tape so that it tapered to the kite string. I lubed the wire to kite string join with fairy liquid. I then poked the coat hanger bit through the tube from the inside, through the hole previously made by the braddle. I then pulled the whole lot through from the engine bay and BINGO the 2 yellow wires easily slipped through the grommet!!! I AM SO RELIEVED I also feel something of a numpty as in the end it was a piece of piss! Now lets get this bastard job finished!

Oh it's hollow alright. I just now managed to poke a braddle through from the inside and the point came out of the end of the protuding tubey bit but the hole won't be large enough to get the wires through....I tried with a screwdriver but there's not enough clearance to get a screwdriver straight (all my handles are too long). I have tried cutting the end off the tubey bit but I can't get at it at an appropriate angle due to all the pipework in the way. I can't poke through from the outside with something like a coat hanger because the tube is very flexible and squishy and there's not enough access to hold it while poking it. You can tell I'm not a mechanic, can't you? but it's raining again so i've come in. Next I think I am going to lube up the wires and see if I can force them through the hole made by the braddle.

Please make it stop raining - I need to finish my car...... And if anyone has any bright ideas re the grommet, I have beer in the fridge

The probelm I have is that the access is appalling. There a re a couple of pipes on our cars that are not in the instruction photos which make access to the grommet incredibly restricted and with the thing being rubber (obviously) and incredibly flexible there is nothing to get any purchase against.
