Hi all, I'm pretty numb right now with an issue with my GT86. Bought the car about 4 months ago with 32k on the clock. Today about 2 mins from my house i get this hideous very aggressive knocking sound. So I pull the car up, lift the bonnet to see if what the issue may be but engine is just knocking badly. I turn off the engine and check dip stick which was really hard to remove but got it out and it wont go back in fully. Goes about 75% in. I've done some digging and i've found a forum in which someone uploaded the same noise and the replys from GT86 owners are basically it's a spun rod bearing issue. I've had a few cars and was mechanic apprentice many years ago so had experience with fixing stuff at basic levels but i'm dreading the outcome as it sounds so bad not to mention engine re-build costs ranging from 2.5k :( I'm getting it towed to a garage Friday but just wondering what peoples thoughts are and why the dipstick wont go back in? The mechanic i spoke to who is collecting car mentioned the dipstick tube could have been damaged. Thanks and FML

Thanks guys. So basically it's a new engine from the factory and they are literally attaching ancillaries to it thankfully. Hopefully picking it up mid next week ! I've attached a picture of her !

Good advice thanks. They have said they are ordering the parts with some not arriving until Friday so I'm not sure if it is a new engine so to speak?

True. I just hope a competent tech / techs work on it. I've read many many cases though of people not getting recall done at high mileage with no issues
-
I've replied to double check as I honestly can't believe it right now after the horror stories I've read but yer I couldn't give a sh#t about a courtesy car or compo right now. Just want my dream car back.

Thanks. This is going to sound ridiculous but I've re-read the email and I actually think they are going to pay the full costs. I think I've been that stressed about it and thinking the worst my brain has read it in a negative way. I came on here to vent immediately as it's been such a useful forum with you guys that I've overlooked what has actually been said. Below is another part of the reply - what do you make of it? Basically RRG have the motor but the fault was done by a tech down south. I appreciate your frustration with the time our review of your complaint has taken. Unfortunately, due to the length of time that has passed between the completion of the recall in June 2019 and the inspection by RRG Salford Quays in November 2020, this is not a straightforward matter. As I hope you will appreciate, we have no way of knowing what has happened to your vehicle between the completion of the recall and the date you took ownership and , whilst I respect the advice you have been given, the manufacturer's warranty on your vehicle has expired. We are sorry for the upset and inconvenience this has caused you and as a gesture of goodwill, we will meet with the full cost of repairs recommended by RRG Salford Quays. We are unable to offer you compensation or a courtesy car.

Update - All feedback greatly appreciated So basically Toyota have stated they are not budging on the 7k cost as a gesture of goodwill even though it's been a fault by a tech with the timing chain replacement. There excuse is - As I hope you will appreciate, we have no way of knowing what has happened to your vehicle between the completion of the recall and the date you took ownership and , whilst I respect the advice you have been given, the manufacturer's warranty on your vehicle has expired. My next step is to basically ask them to pay the current market value of the car if it was running which would be about 10-11k and my reasons for this are - it will cost them 16k to fix and they are saying they will reduce cost by 9k so wouldn't it make sense for them to pay me off 10k for example instead of spending 16k to repair it? Or will that 16k include labour ? I mean if I pay this 7k that's a total of 18.5k I've paid for a 2013 when I could get a much more recent model for that! Following this I have been in touch with an IAEA Qualified Engineer to look at the engine and do a report before I get back in touch with my local solicitors but I mean i could end up paying huge fees to lose my case realistically. Honestly this has been one of the most stressful situations I've ever been in and I've served in Afghan ! FML

Yer I've checked but they don't cover anything regarding a contract involving a motor vehicle. I think if they are stubborn with me paying, it would be cheaper to get in touch with a solicitors but god knows what fees that would be to get a competent independent automotive engineer assessor look at the engine before I even begin.
-
Yer i remember your previous post of you situation. No courtesy car at all although it was mentioned they were looking into what they could do for me. I will fight this as much as I can as it's just unfeasible me paying that amount and I simply don't think I should have to.

Latest update. So after a month now and emails and calls back and forth with me basically chasing for what the hell is going on this is the latest. Basically Toyota as a 'gesture of goodwill' have reduced the price of the fix from 16K to 7K! They are claiming that as its been over a year since the recall ( even though only 2k miles has been put on it since ) they are not taking full responsibility even though I was told it was technician error with the timing chain not being put back on correctly. I have spoken to a local solicitors who said I could have a case but I would need to have a competent independent automotive engineer assessor look at the engine before I proceed basically. In the meantime I have complained directly to the Customer Services Director basically arguing my case as it's quite frankly absurd this 'gesture of goodwill' Currently a Specialist Case Manager is looking into this fiasco and will get back to me asap.

Thanks for your advice and yer I will mention this forum. I'm in touch with customer relations just waiting for an update and what they are going to do about a courtesy car. Phonecalls to follow to keep the pressure on!
-
Latest update. So the service manager has basically said the dealership who did the recall and Toyota GB are currently in talks for who will be paying the bill. Needs a new engine which is no surprise. I've chased Toyota customer relations basically asking them to escalate it and what the situation is with a courtesy car like you guys have mentioned as there's no way I will be getting this back this year I'd imagine with having to get parts etc. I've asked why the problem occurred regarding timing chain error like was it an apprentice working on it etc but they don't know apparently! 😐
-
Yes I have wondered this. Like are they covering the fact it was yet another botched valve recall job with too much sealant or whatever starving the engine? Either way it's obvious the techs need better training on boxer engines
-
The bizarre thing with the chain going on mine was there was no warning, no engine gulping or anything, just a hideous knocking sound and game over. Luckily about 100 metres from my drive!
-
Yer I was losing sleep at the thought of the potential bill and loosing the car as I adore it. God knows how long it will take to fix as I don't even know if they would stock half the parts here including the block? They have had it for basically a month now 😕
-
Apparently its being investigated. I asked multiple questions but I could sense he was weary saying too much but basically said it was 'left loose' Multiple photographs have been taken and it's being looked into by Toyota GB and the 2 dealerships. Getting an update end of week I was informed.
-
Update - technicians at Toyota Manchester have opened engine and apparently whoever did the engine for recall didn't do the timing chain properly ! It's basically lasted 2500 miles and obviously caused mayhem internally eventually. Service manager said it will probably need a new block and I'd imagine other parts. They are still investigating issue and it sounds to me like they are figuring out who is going to pay as the recall was done at Toyota Listers. Ironically my last BMW I bought, the timing chain went after I drove it home from dealers but that was at 70k miles. I seemed to be cursed with timing chain issues 😨

Ok so latest update. I feel phyiscally sick after phonecall with local garage. Basically they did thier own diagnostics and basic fault finding without touching the engine. He's said there's severe damage internally but obviously didnt want to start lifting the engine. So i've managed to get in touch with Local Toyota dealership and had my car towed there for expert testing. This apparently costs £130 not that i will 100% pay this depending on what they find. I will have an update back by the end of the week but dreading the outcome. I took out a loan for 12k for this car and from what the first bloke said at local garage, i could be looking at like 6-8k if i bought second hand engine 😕 No chance i'd pay to have this done as it's not worth it. Fingers crossed this turns out to be Toyotas fault.

Many thanks for this info mate. I reached out to Toyota GB yesterday and they have passed my issue on to the warranty department so I will see what comes back. It's currently in with a local garage who are going to look at it but i've told them not to lift the engine or anything so hoping they pick something up on the diagnostics test they do. I'm concerned now as potential full lockdown happening so my car could be stuck there for some time! Also after calling the Toyota garage that did it's last repairs June 2019 - it turns out it was for Valve recall ! Their warranty though for that place is only up to 12 months.
-
Sorry i'm talking nonsense - 2500 since i bought the car but overall 10K since the engine lift
-
If it wasn't a recall though and the previous owner has taken it in over a year ago to be repaired for whatever reason - do I have a leg to stand on ?
-
I've made an account and found the following which is worrying and doesn't state anymore after the 'removal of engine found' : The service book states Valve Springs for the 2019 part but what is that 2016 recall ? about 2500

Thanks - sadly the recall was June 2019 😡

Thanks for the reponses guys, So its 2013 and i bought it off a previous lady owner and she provided me paperwork of it having the recall. Has no modifications ( apart from me painting calipers red ! ) I checked the oil a few ago which was bang on correct level. The dipstick is completely normal but something is stopping it from inserting fully. This is the thread i found and the sound is pretty much identical : https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/8mk638/toyota_86_engine_rattle_knocking_sound/ As i mentioned it's being picked up tomorrow as i dont want to run it at all incase it destroys internally even more. I'm gutted as this is the best car i've driven and just got rid of my BM 3 series which had had countless faults with but nothing ever this severe. Cheers
