Hello everyone on this gorgeous August Bank Holiday. I recently fitted has bonnet struts to my GTS86 and as I whilst doing it I noticed two sections of the underside of the bonnet that looked suspiciously like they may be almost perfect shapes for cutting out and putting in vents. As I haven’t seen anything on the forums (here or elsewhere) that specifically mentions what looks like Toyota preparing for future optional heat vents, I was wondering if anyone else has noticed these and, if so, has actually found any louvres/vents that would fit? I have an HKS S/C + a Cobra catback res exhaust system on mine, and haven’t noticed any undue heat problems, however I have yet to track race it, which I will be doing later this year after my brake pad and fluid / plus Tein Flex A and EDFC Active Pro installations, which is my late summer / autumn project I don’t have any photos to hand to show what I am talking about, though I may add them later today, especially if it appears that my (Australian bought and imported to the U.K. when I returned last year) GTS has them and they aren’t standard here. From looking at the shapes and position, it looks exactly like a design addition targeting future options on the car, that may not have seen the light of day perhaps.

Hi All, Thought we'd start a little thread to keep a track of things with our own in house GT86, we've owned it from new in May 2013 and its been a LOT of fun, lovely car to live with everyday, and fantastic on twisty lanes as i'm sure all of you already know Anyhow, we picked the car up in May 2013, having a set of Rota Torque Drift wheels in 18x9.5 ET35 in Bronze waiting for it at the workshop, along with a set of BC Racing BR Series coilovers. Those went on the car approximately 40 minutes after collecting it Along with some subtle decals along the sides after taking inspiration from the optional sticker kit from Toyota. We used the car for a little while like this, letting the engine break in nicely and not giving it too much abuse from day 1. Several hundred miles later, we popped her onto the Dyno and did a few base runs to see what we we're working with. The plot is our car, having done around 10 pulls, the power varied from 179bhp to 184bhp, this being the highest it made. From there we designed our exhaust system, second decat, overpipe and equal length manifold, along with a remap on the ECUTeK software! This saw us at a peak of 205bhp, smoothening out the torque dip area hugely with the manifold along with the remap. The car was completely different to drive as to be expected, and drove a lot better than the improvements would show on paper. Having explored that area we then moved onto forced induction... We designed our inhouse turbo kit, choosing to mount the turbo right up top at the front of the engine bay, with the factory airbox out of the way it leaves a perfect area for the turbo to sit along with external wastegate and downpipe. We chose to run a larger frame turbo from the get go as to keep the kit 'future proof'. Onto the Dyno the car went and began tuning, running via a TiAL MVR 44m external wastegate, we get precise and perfect boost control everytime which is exactly what we wanted when forcing air into an engine of this caliber. After time on the dyno and at a very modest 5psi or 0.35bar we managed to boost our horsepower by 94bhp upto 278bhp and boosted our peak torque from 160lb.ft upto 230lb.ft. Still on the stock clutch, fuel pump, injectors and so on. Needless to say this has transformed the car into something very special, no longer is there the need to rev the car to get it to go, joining motorways and picking up speed feels effortless. The power band below 4000rpm is night and day different to a factory car. It has to be experienced to explain it fully The car has took hours on the dyno along with months on the road and now thousands of miles, gathering mileage and data logs in varying environments to ensure its longevity and reliability. We're glad to say it hasn't missed a beat and on a good run we still return 44mpg We also added a powerflex rear gearbox mount insert, along with their rear differential and rear subframe inserts, these have made a nice improvement to the car, without adding any negative input to the daily drivability of the car. Ontop of this we fitted some KSport 8Pot/356mm Front Brakes along with KSport 4Pot/356mm Rear Brakes in 'caution yellow'. The car now stops on a sixpence and adds a lot of confidence when pushing on into braking zones. We removed the stock spoiler and replaced it with a TRD version which really finishes off the exterior of the car for us. We're a big fan of the factory bodyshape The car also has the GFB Lightweight Pulley kit installed. I'll add to this as we continue to push forward with things, we have fuel system, drivetrain and electronic boost control going onto the car very shortly and will be winding the boost up some more to form the next stage to our turbo package More to follow! Thanks for reading Mike Jones Tuning Developments Ltd

My drive in the HKS GT86 (With a supercharger) I’m not one for words so I will be brief. It was a pleasure speaking to Maz. He clearly has a lot of interest in the GT86 and a genuine car enthusiast. The car as mentioned before has the High-Flow Exhaust, 18inch rims with 225s all round, the HKS suspension (I forget the model), an Oil cooler and the Supercharger Kit. Based on the Dyno, it suggests about a +42% increase in power. Putting it at around 280HP at the fly (Maz suggests about 260HP conservatively). First Impressions The suspension was firm but compliant. I was reasonably impressed with the ride over rough B-roads. What I was impressed with was the cornering. Now I am not sure how much difference the tyres make but the wheel/suspension combo on this car works very well. Turn in was very sharp with minimal roll and the car felt lighter. It would be very nice as a track car but not sure if I could handle the ride on a daily basis. It all depends on your personal preference. I drive a Merc C Class as a daily so I am used to comfort. The exhaust for me was far too loud. I would want something just a bit louder than the stock exhaust - especially with the sound generator deleted. The note however was nice, and cruising at 60MPH it was dulled down to the slight rumble. The supercharger was the main attraction for me and the main reason I went to drive the car. The car felt very quick particularly above 4k where it really comes to life. In 5th gear at 2.5k rpm it has notably more grunt that the stock car, picking up nicely. I would have liked the torque to increase more linearly as you can clearly feel when the 4k boost comes on. I would have like a constant, steady increase in torque as rpm increases. It feels a bit like the old Celica when the cams change over. I wonder if this will improve with development work. Through the gears the car felt like a proper quick sports car. I would estimate 5-5.5sec 0-60. Each gear felt as if you were in a gear below in the stock car. Power feels flat from about 5k-7k which the sweet spot for a centrifugal setup. The jury is out. I need to drive the other FI cars to make my mind up, but a very nice setup indeed.

Last weekend Maz from HKS Europe was kind enough to come up to Norwich for a little meet and to let me take his newly supercharged GT86 out for a drive. Over the Christmas period Maz (which some of you probably met at the UK Meet) supercharged his GT86 using the HKS Kit. First look at the kit is that it’s very impressive to look at and definitely show-off material! Pipes are nice and shiny. The charger sits right up top in front of the throttle body and is the main focus on the engine bay. Lots of nice looking pipe work and all looks very clean. Far from an OEM look though! … Maz has this kit coupled up with the HKS High-Flow Exhaust and also fitted an oil cooler. On initial thoughts driving out of a busy crowded city there was little to experience. Whilst pottering around and maybe getting to a top speed of 25mph there's not much difference to an oem car, still drives very well at low speeds. A subtle little air rush sound on over-run. But nothing exciting yet. We get out on to the dual carriageway, up the slip road I was following a 40 tonne lorry! Soon as I could see clear lane I pulled out and booted it. Initial thought was ‘hmm not much going on’ couldn’t see the £5k improvement over my remapped car. But then we hit 4k rpm! The car just lifted the torque came and we flew. It was smooth, fast and a little surprising. The amount of speed it picks up whilst being very unassuming was amazing. No fuss just speed. It was different to the turbo where you can really feel the speed building and the acceleration. The supercharger you looked down as was just going quicker. Which was a unique feeling! It was particularly good when overtaking. Dropping down a gear and hitting the 3500rpm range the car just pulls and you get past in no time! But again you don’t really feel anything going on. You’re just going quick! This is obviously a first stage initial install HKS SC with not much UK development yet! But for first impressions I was impressed! Currently the HKS kit comes with a piggy back ECU which Maz thinks is limiting the system. But development is being carried out for the kit to work with EcuTek. Being a first install this isn't producing it’s peak power and not producing anything near the Avo Turbo kit, it doesn't seem to have any problem being installed with the stock clutch. This is apparent but it’s still quick and is going to have some serious potential. Definitely an increase in Torque. Patches the Torque dip well and outputs smooth NA feel power. The one downside for me with this kit was the sound. On over run when you lift of the throttle the extra boost gets diverted around a series of tubes. Which makes a loud whooshing sound constantly inside the cabin. Almost like metal grinding together. This is good when you’re going on a mad run and driving hard and want that feedback. But I imagine it could get annoying after a while on a long journey cruising up to roundabouts on the motorway etc. But Maz has said that can be toned down and probably hidden. Some people may love it! Overall it’s a good solid install and producing a good amount of power. Estimated at around 240bhp on the initial base map. It’s pretty to look at has potential of being a great system. Backed by HKS it should see some good improvements and development on it! I’ll be following this closely once its been mapped with the EcuTek maps.
